DYKINFORMATION 🙂
Join our dive guides to marvel at the stunning underwater world! Diving at Maratua easily rivals any dive site you can think of. More turtles then you have ever seen, gigantic schools of barracuda’s, grey sharks, white tip sharks and the occasional hammerhead are just some of the pelagic animals. But we also offer you mandarin fish, pygmy sea horses, leaffish, mantis shrimp, cuttle fish, etc. And also the numerous manta rays at Sangalaki, or the huge jellyfish lake on Kakaban. Oh, and did we mention the thresher shark that lives on our house reef?
The waters around PULAU MARATUA are still a secret to be discovered. There is something for all types of divers. Whether you want to see the large pelagic life, search for the smallest an weirdest critters, snorkel in a huge jellyfish lake or watch mandarin fish mate on our house reef: there is more to see than you can imagine! And it is no exaggeration that Maratua is the Turtle Capital of Indonesia: because of the turtle breeding grounds we guarantuee you will see turtles when you dive here. In fact, it will be pretty hard to make a dive without turtles.
Due to the constant currents, you will find very healthy reefs and excellent coral growth. The variety and size of the corals around Maratua and nearby islands can hardly be found in other popular and famous sites. But the best thing about the currents is the underwater visibility. This visibility rivals most other dive sites and it is no exception to have a visibility of 100ft/30m and (much) more.
Diving around Maratua means diving with relaxed currents. You will find an amazing underwater life. But if you enjoy thrills: dive in the soaring currents of the channel: a narrow opening in the reef through which water flows into the Maratua lagoon. You will see sharks, rays, large schools of pelagic fish, etc. And at the end of the day you jump from the jetty into our house reef, to check out the mating mandarin fish, the stargazers, leaffish, cuttlefish, and a lot more. The sunset dives here are famous!
Maratua and the surrounding islands offer excellent wall dives and spectacular drop-offs. While other dive sites have a gentle or steep reefs. There is a great variety in underwater geography, so no two dives will be the same. Once a week (depending on the weather and sea conditions) we visit the islands of SANGALAKI and KAKABAN. Sangalaki is famous for it’s large schools of manta rays. It is not unusual to find schools of up to 40-50 manta rays!
On Kakaban you will dip into the 5 square km jellyfish lake. An amazing sight! But we will also make some spectacular dives along the reef walls where we may run into grey sharks, leopard sharks or an occasional hammerhead. Whatever you are looking for, we’re sure we have it for you!
